TOT Sling Mesh Complications

Vaginal mesh complications can occur after the Transobturator Tape (TOT) transvaginal mesh implants. Mesh surgeon experts Drs. Miklos & Moore have removed hundreds of these surgical mesh complications including more than 100 complete TOT sling removals through the groin. Most experienced doctors will only remove the vaginal portion of the TOT sling. Drs. Moore & Miklos will remove the whole sling from groin to groin if the vaginal mesh complication indications are appropriate.

The TOT sling was developed to stop cough urine leakage aka stress urine incontinence and was initially developed to have a much lower complication rate than the TVT sling. The TOT sling is passed through the groin and was developed to reduce risks known to occur with the passage of the abdominal needles for placement of the TVT type sling (ie bladder, bowel, major vascular injury). Instead of passing needles blindly through the abdominal wall, the needles are passed through the groins, which is a potentially a much safer needle pass.

Sling complications encountered with the TOT sling have shown to have similar mesh complications of the TVT sling however it typically does not result in abdominal pain issues. However, with the needle now passing through the groin patients can experience acute and chronic groin pain. The most common mesh complication symptom associated with the TOT sling is pain during intercourse. Transvaginal mesh implants like the TOT sling can result in mesh complications such as : vaginal pain, pain with intercourse, mesh erosion, urine retention, difficulty emptying the bladder, groin pain, inner thigh pain, and erosion of the mesh into the bladder or urethra which may require vaginal mesh removal.
