RECTOCELE

Diagnosis

A rectocele is a defect in the support system (i.e. rectovaginal fascia) of the floor of the vagina and usually presents as bulge in the vagina. The floor of the vagina is also known as the posterior vaginal wall. When a woman’s rectocele is large enough she may suffer from symptoms including: vaginal pressure, vaginal bulge, difficulty evacuating her rectum, constipation, loose stools, or painful intercourse.

TREATMENTS

POSTERIOR REPAIR

The Posterior Repair is the most commonly performed operation to repair a rectocele. Drs. Miklos & Moore utilize the site-specific posterior repair technique and can add a biologic graft when necessary. A site-specific repair simply means to repair the supportive layer wherever it is broken. The surgical technique is seen below.

Despite being one of the most common operations in the field of gynecology it is probably one of the most poorly understood as the rate of success is 80 % – 1 year after surgery and 60% – 3 years after surgery for any surgeon. Fortunately it is also one of the least invasive surgeries that gynecologic surgeons perform. Drs. Miklos & Moore will use augmentation grafts (pigskin) to reinforce the posterior repair if the patient has failed at least two previous surgeries and at the patients request.
